I thought if you wanted to start a business, you should start out shooting for free?

Saw a post about someone who was shooting an event for free, but a ton of the comments were talking about why you would shoot for free. I thought, as a beginning photographer, you should shoot as much as you can to get your name out there, which includes shooting free, is this wrong?
