How to wash your face at the sink without making a huge mess
I see this question asked often and I hope my tips will help someone. I'm an esthetician and had cystic acne when I was younger, which I think helped me perfect this as much as possible. If you have any tips to add, please do! Here's my protocol for washing my face at the sink:
Wash your hands
Lay a hand towel folded in half length-wise at the front of the sink
Put your hair up, put on a headband
Wet a washcloth or 4×4 rayon gauze and wring it out, have it ready
Run a little water
Add cleanser to your fingertips (as much as you need), then apply to your dry face
Don't tug at your skin! If you need more slip, add water a tiny bit at a time by running just your fingertips under the water. If your cleanser specifically says to add water, do that in the same way. If it starts running down the back of your hands, dab on the towel
Massage the cleanser in gently - don't miss your hairline and eyes
Grab your wet washcloth or gauze and wipe the cleanser away from your eyes first. Then work your way from the hairline down. Don't scrub, just remove the dirt and product
Splash with water to remove any residue from the cleanser. Lean over the sink, then immediately dry with a soft towel and dabbing motions
Wipe gently with a cotton pad saturated with your choice of toner. If it looks a tiny bit dirty, just take note and do better with the cleanse next time. Don't cleanse again unless it's crazy residue
