Spotted in Paris—the Surprising Shoe Trend That Looks Chic with Shorts and Knee-Length Skirts
Our take

The runways and, increasingly, the streets of Paris have consistently served as a barometer for discerning style, and the latest observation—the surprising resurgence of a specific shoe silhouette—is no exception. It’s a trend that speaks to a broader shift towards understated elegance, a quiet confidence that prioritizes quality and versatility over fleeting trends. While maximalism has enjoyed its moment, a return to foundational pieces, expertly styled, feels particularly relevant for the modern woman. This isn't about chasing the latest "it" shoe; it’s about investing in a piece that seamlessly integrates into a considered wardrobe, proving its worth season after season. The rise of this trend aligns with our recent exploration of the enduring appeal of minimalist footwear, as demonstrated by the popularity of The Row’s flats and the surprisingly convincing Zara alternative [If You Love Kendall and Elsa's The Row Flats, Zara's $40 Version Is Almost Impossible to Tell Apart]. Both speak to a desire for elevated basics.
The beauty of this Parisian-spotted trend lies in its adaptability. The ability to transition effortlessly from shorts to knee-length skirts—and beyond—is a hallmark of true style. It’s a testament to the power of understated design; a shoe doesn't need excessive embellishment or a bold statement to command attention. Instead, it relies on impeccable construction, refined materials, and a timeless silhouette. This complements the broader return to "urban prep" currently sweeping fashion, a movement that favors polished separates and a sense of quiet sophistication [Preppy Is Back, But Not How You Know It—How Fashion’s Chicest Are Wearing It This Summer]. It’s a move away from overly casual aesthetics, embracing a more considered and put-together sensibility. The key here is that this isn’t a revival of the aggressively preppy looks of the past; it’s a modern interpretation, filtered through a lens of contemporary cool.
The enduring relevance of classic style is further evidenced by the continued fascination with royal style icons, and the recent embrace of autumnal color combinations mirroring Kate Middleton’s wardrobe [It's Already Autumn in Kate Middleton's Wardrobe—This is the Classy Colour Combination We'll All Be Copying Soon]. There’s a clear appetite for timelessness, for pieces that transcend seasonal fluctuations and remain relevant for years to come. This shoe trend, with its inherent versatility and understated elegance, perfectly embodies that desire. It's not about cyclical trends but about building a wardrobe of considered investments, pieces that elevate everyday looks and become reliable staples. It's a conscious rejection of disposable fashion, opting instead for enduring quality and effortless style.
Ultimately, this Parisian observation highlights a powerful shift in consumer priorities. The focus is moving away from fleeting trends towards enduring quality and versatile pieces that can be styled in myriad ways. It’s a return to the fundamentals of good style—investment pieces, impeccable tailoring, and a confidence in one’s personal aesthetic. The question now becomes: how will this trend evolve as we move further into the season, and will other global fashion capitals adopt this understated elegance as their own?
If you're looking to invest in a new-season shoe that can plug a few wardrobe gaps, I've come across a surprisingly versatile silhouette fresh from the streets of Paris. Chic enough to pair with skirts and just as easy with shorts, it's firmly on my summer styling radar right now.
Courtesy of Jennifer Lopez, who this week stepped out in a divisive pair of vinyl heels, I've been completely won over by this unexpected shoe trend. Whilst flip-flops have dominated celebrity wardrobes this season, JLo instead reached for a pair of vinyl heels, styling them with thigh-grazing shorts for a sleek and coordinated look.

Worn with high-waisted, near skin-toned shorts, the barely-there shoes created a sleek, uninterrupted line that made her legs look miles long, meanwhile, her billowy, boho blouse softened the look with a feminine, romantic finish.
A few days later, I spotted JLo out again in the very same trend, this time styling the clear shoes with the season's favourite knee-length skirt trend. Sticking to the same styling formula, she chose a high-waisted skirt in a rich earthy hue, once again using the transparent heels to elongate her legs.

Working within an elegant palette of pale pink, crisp white and warm earthy tones, JLo highlighted one of the vinyl heel's greatest strengths: because the shoes are virtually colourless, they complement almost any shade.
So, if you're packing shorts and skirts for a trip to Paris—or looking for a shoe that can easily style both—take JLo's lead. Read on to shop my edit of the best vinyl heels below.
