Hold Your Minimalistic Manicures—Animal-Print Nails Are About to Take Over Autumn
Our take

The runways have spoken, and the beauty world is taking note: animal print is no longer confined to our wardrobes; it’s poised to dominate manicures this autumn. While we’ve long embraced leopard-print trousers and snakeskin boots – a testament to enduring style – the traditionalist approach to nails, often favoring a classic red manicure or a milky neutral, is about to undergo a significant shift. This isn’t merely a fleeting trend; it's a reflection of a broader cultural embrace of boldness and unapologetic self-expression. Consider the recent resurgence of faux fur, a playful and luxurious statement piece that’s already capturing attention I’ll Know You’re a Fashion Person If You’re Wearing One of These Faux Fur Fashion Trends This Autumn, or the savvy consumer’s continued pursuit of elevated basics I'm Updating My Autumn Wardrobe On a Budget—9 Zara, H&M and COS Buys On My Wish List, both signaling a desire for pieces that are both impactful and carefully considered. The move to animal print nails aligns perfectly with this ethos.
The shift signifies a move away from understated elegance towards a more assertive, personality-driven aesthetic. For years, nail trends have often followed a predictable cycle of neutrals, pale pinks, and seasonal shades. While these remain undeniably chic, the current appetite for statement-making details suggests a desire to inject a dose of playful drama into even the smallest aspects of personal presentation. The inherent boldness of animal print, whether it's a subtle leopard spot or a striking zebra stripe, allows for a powerful yet accessible form of self-expression. It’s a detail that can elevate a simple outfit, adding a touch of unexpected intrigue. Furthermore, the versatility of animal print allows for considerable creative interpretation, from full-coverage designs to delicate accent nails, catering to a wide range of personal styles and comfort levels. The key is intentionality – a curated approach to the print, ensuring it complements rather than overwhelms the overall look.
The beauty industry has been keenly observing this evolution, responding with a wealth of new polishes and nail art techniques to accommodate the trend. Expect to see a spectrum of animal-inspired shades, from classic leopard and cheetah to more experimental variations incorporating metallic accents or unexpected color combinations. The rise of nail art specialists and readily available tutorials also empowers individuals to experiment with more intricate designs, further fueling the trend’s momentum. This isn’t about replicating a look from a magazine; it’s about personalizing the trend to reflect individual taste and style. The resurgence speaks to a broader cultural shift where individuality is celebrated, and fashion serves as a powerful medium for self-discovery and expression. And, mirroring the broader shift towards considered consumption, even within the beauty space, we’re seeing an emphasis on quality and longevity, as evidenced by the enduring appeal of timeless autumn trends I Did a Double-Take When I Saw These 5 Elegant Autumn Trends Had Landed in M&S.
Looking ahead, the question isn't *if* animal print nails will dominate autumn, but rather *how* the trend will evolve. Will we see a move towards more abstract interpretations of animal prints, or perhaps a fusion with other trending aesthetics? The possibilities are vast, and the beauty world will undoubtedly be watching closely as individuals embrace this bold and exciting new chapter in nail design. Will this be a fleeting moment of maximalism, or a signal of a longer-term shift towards a more expressive and adventurous approach to personal style?
I’ve always had a soft spot for animal print and, in my wardrobe, there’s no shortage of leopard-print trousers, snakeskin-inspired boots, tortoiseshell sunglasses and even the odd zebra or cow-print handbag. Yet, when it comes to my nails, I’m something of a traditionalist, opting almost exclusively for a classic red manicure or a milky neutral. And whilst most Autumn/Winters we see an animal print or two dominating the fashion world, it’s not often that those prints naturally cross over into the beauty sphere—until now. From Bambi-inspired manicures to zebra-striped French tips, this season, animal prints are coming for our nails too.

“Animal print has that rare combination of being instantly recognisable, but endlessly adaptable,” explains celebrity and session manicurist Ami Streets. “Leopard, zebra, tortoiseshell and snakeskin can all be reinterpreted through colour, scale, placement and finish, and they work surprisingly well on nails because the patterns are naturally imperfect.” If you’re not sure where to start, then Streets points out that leopard makes for an obvious choice and a timeless favourite, but for autumn/winter 2026 nails she’s most excited about striped prints. “Zebra and tiger-inspired manicures feel a little more contemporary and fashion-forward this season, and there are so many ways to interpret them—from classic monochrome zebra to richer, more autumnal tiger tones,” Streets explains.
And if you’re feeling a bit nervous, Streets suggests starting small. “Try an animal-print French tip or even just a few tiny spots in your print of choice layered over a neutral sheer nude or milky base,” she suggests. Choosing a tonal colour palette, think neutral shades like chocolate browns and caramels rather than high-contrast shades, can also make the trend feel more wearable.
