10+ Years of Being a Beauty Editor Qualifies Me to Say That This Is the Best Face Tan Ever Made
Our take

The beauty landscape thrives on curated discovery, and the recent declaration from a Who What Wear beauty editor – that she's finally ready to share what she’s long gatekept – carries significant weight. For those immersed in the world of high-end skincare and makeup, the endorsement of a seasoned professional who routinely tests hundreds of products is akin to a whispered secret finally revealed. This isn’t a fleeting trend or a viral sensation; it’s a validation from someone who understands the nuances of formulation, application, and long-term efficacy. The editor’s commitment to classic products and her discerning eye suggest a level of trust rarely extended in the perpetually evolving beauty industry, making this particular recommendation all the more compelling. It echoes a recent exploration of unconventional beauty techniques, as demonstrated by celebrities like Zendaya, where Confirmed by MUAs: Hollywood's Best-Kept Beauty Secret Involves *This* Unconventional Blush Placement proves that innovation often lies in reinterpreting established norms. Similarly, the current fascination with lip aesthetics, exemplified by the styles favored by Hailey, Sadie, and Kaia, as detailed in Hailey, Sadie and Kaia All Agree That This Is the Coolest Way to Wear Your Lipstick Right Now, highlights a broader desire for subtle yet impactful enhancements.
The significance of this "best face tan ever made" declaration lies in its potential to disrupt the often-overcrowded market of self-tanning products. Many boast of ease of application and natural-looking results, yet consistently fall short, resulting in streaks, unnatural orange tones, or a generally patchy finish. The editor's prolonged gatekeeping suggests a product that genuinely delivers on its promises, offering a level of quality and performance that sets it apart. It speaks to a growing consumer desire for authenticity and transparency in the beauty space, where carefully constructed marketing campaigns are increasingly scrutinized. Consumers are seeking genuine recommendations from trusted sources, rather than being swayed by fleeting influencer endorsements. The subtle shift away from overtly dramatic makeup looks, evidenced by the polished and understated glamour seen at events like the Emmys, where All the Emmys After-Party Looks You Haven't Seen showcased the elegance of Kaia Gerber and others, reinforces the preference for a natural, radiant complexion. This face tan, then, isn’t about achieving a false tan; it’s about enhancing one’s natural luminosity.
The broader implication is a continued elevation of the self-tanning category, moving it beyond a seasonal trend and solidifying it as a year-round essential for achieving a healthy, sun-kissed glow. This product's success could pave the way for more sophisticated formulations, focusing on skin-nourishing ingredients and even more seamless application techniques. The willingness of an established beauty editor to publicly champion a single product signals a departure from the relentless cycle of new releases and fleeting fads, suggesting a growing appreciation for longevity and proven performance. It’s a testament to the power of genuine expertise and the enduring appeal of understated luxury. The gatekeeping period, and the subsequent release, cultivates a sense of exclusivity and desirability, further amplifying the product’s perceived value.
Ultimately, this seemingly simple endorsement begs a larger question: are we entering an era where the voices of seasoned professionals—those who dedicate their careers to rigorous product testing and analysis—will regain prominence over the constant stream of influencer marketing? Will consumers prioritize informed recommendations over viral trends, seeking out products that truly deliver on their promises, rather than simply offering an aesthetic appeal? The continued success of this face tan, and the reactions it elicits within the beauty community, will provide valuable insight into the evolving dynamics of consumer trust and the enduring power of authentic expertise.
If you've been reading Who What Wear's beauty pages for some time, you'll know I don't often shout about the brilliance of one product. The truth is, I'm a tough critic. I try hundreds of new beauty products every year, and for the most part, I'm a creature of habit—I stick to classic products I trust wholeheartedly. Now and again, though, I come across a lesser-known, underrated product that I cling onto for dear life—and that is exactly what happened when I first tried Three Warriors Hydrabronze Face Tan Drops a couple of years ago.
I've long understood the power of facial tanning drops, but I'm too lazy to faff around applying them. I've tried almost every fake tan that has ever come my way, and when it comes to formulas for the face, I'm beyond picky. I have to be able to apply them every day without fear of turning orange or overdoing it. They need to work with my existing skincare routine and not add another step. They need to be so well formulated that I never need to worry about streaks and patches. And above all, they need to be so convincing in their bronzy finish that people regularly compliment my glow. And trust me when I say these drops do all of that.

Pros
- Super simple to use
- Suitable for sensitive skin
- Deliver the most convincing bronze
- Flexible for all skin tones with customisable application and two shades
- Antioxidants keep skin glowing
- Hydrating properties mean tan never turns patchy
- They don't aggravate my acne
- Have never stained my sheets
Cons
- My only gripe is that I can't pick them up on my local high-street, otherwise they're flawless
In fact, I'd argue that there is no face tan out there that meets my strict criteria—Three Warriors Hydrabronze is the only one. What makes it so good? Indulge me for a moment whilst I reel off the list. For starters, I want to talk about the shade. In the summer, I personally use two drops of medium-dark mixed into my serum every single day. In the winter, I use four drops of light-medium. The intensity of the tan is fully customisable; want more glow, apply more drops. Plus, the sheer nature of the product means it proves a standout facial tan for dark skin.
And whilst all of this is no doubt great, the thing that makes this product so special is the shade of tan. Unlike so many others, it's not orange or intensely golden. Instead, it has that deep brown tone that mimics a real-life tan better than any other tanning product I've ever used.

Then, we get onto the formula. Containing hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, glycerin and an array of antioxidant-rich ingredients, this tan is the closest thing to legitimate skincare I've ever tried. I know lots of tan brands claim that their formulas are skincare-infused, but this product really delivers. It leaves skin radiant, bouncy and as though it's glowing from within. This, combined with the shade of tan itself, means I find myself batting off compliments about how glowing I look basically every day. And I am not exaggerating.

In fact, you can ask any of my Who What Wear colleagues, and they will attest to the fact that my ability to maintain a tan on my face year-round has become the talk of the office. I have converted no fewer than six of my equally-as-hard-to-impress editors to Three Warriors Hydrabronze, and they too have never looked back (including editor-in-chief Jane McFarland, who I regularly see sneaking out of the beauty cupboard clutching a bottle or two).
The truth is, I have spent well over a decade testing and trialling some of the best facial tans out there in a bid to find the magic formula—and I found it with these. I feel so passionately about the beauty of these tanning drops that I will put my hands up and say that, yes, for the most part I've been gatekeeping them. Sure, they feature regularly in my monthly Empties Edit, but honestly? I'd rather they remained somewhat under the radar so that my tan looks forever better than everyone else's. Selfish? Me? Never.

If you prefer a spray formula, this facial tan is also stand-out. It delivers a more intense "tan" than the Hydrabronze drops, making it perfect for special events.
